Emotional Intelligence
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is how we understand, use, and manage our emotions, the interpretation of the emotional states of others, and how we utilize this information to guide our thinking and behavior. These abilities play a fundamental role in our success in building relationships, succeeding at school or work, and meeting personal goals.
Why is it important to develop it?
Many researchers believe that emotional intelligence should hold the same degree of importance in education as the core subjects of math, reading, history and science. In fact, research has found that people with higher levels of emotional intelligence do better in school, have better relationships and display less unhealthy behaviors. Additionally, many of these skills i.e. stress management, effective communication, and conflict resolution, are necessary skills in daily life.
By developing emotional intelligence in our children, we give them the resources they need to manage their emotions in an appropriate way, by recognizing instead of repressing them. In recognizing their emotions, they learn to control them, rather than the opposite.
The importance of emotional education is indisputable and should begin early, as it will provide children with the foundation for emotional management, healthy relationships, and personal success.
Tips for developing emotional intelligence in our children
Create a positive emotional environment where children feel comfortable to be, to think and to feel.
Encourage recognition of emotional states and feelings as natural and healthy.
Help children identify their emotions and the emotions of others. Label each feeling. Determine how they are alike and/or different from other emotions.
Teach them to reflect upon their feelings; what made them feel a certain way? Help them understand that they are able to direct their emotions.
Teach them positive forms of emotional expression: sports, art, drawing, music, dialogue, etc…
Be an example. Children will learn from your daily emotional reactions.
Show them the importance of knowing how to manage emotions. Proper management does not mean suppressing them, but being able to control them before they control us.
Teach them to feel fearless. Let them know that all emotions are a part of us and serve a purpose. The important thing is to let feelings flow and not repress them.
