Reading with Toddlers
Reading to your child is one of the most valuable gifts you can give. Early and repeated experiences of being read to are very important. Young children learn to listen before they learn to speak, and success in school depends heavily on understanding language and communication.
For younger children, start with picture books. Children are naturally curious about signs, symbols, and pictures within their environment. Pictures help tell the story for toddlers.
Books that include rhymes are fun for children to listen to and will help keep their attention. If your toddler doesn't seem interested or can't sit still at first, don't get worried or frustrated. Work at their pace and try different types of books and stories. Make storytime part of your daily routine.
