Young children are learning who they are and are curious about their bodies. Talking to your child about their body will help increase self-esteem and build confidence. School-age children may start asking questions about their bodies. By answering your child's questions in simple terms, your child will learn that the body and its functions are normal.

It is normal for babies to touch their bodies; they learn about their body through touch. From early on, we can use simple but real words to talk about all parts of the body, including the genitals. Remember that your child is simply curious. Bath and diaper time are good times to talk about body parts.

For toddlers and preschoolers, teach your child to set limits regarding their body. It's okay to say ‘No, thank you’ if you don't want to be hugged, kissed, or touched. Also, it is important to tell them in a simple and calm way that no one should touch their private parts and that they should never keep secrets in relation to the body.

Let's help our children have a healthy relationship with their bodies from an early age. We are always available to support you here at SmartStart, your parent resource center.
